What is a Goldendoodle?

First Generation

(F1 Goldendoodle)

A first generation hybrid Goldendoodle is the product of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.

Coat Maintenance: Moderate care

Coat Description: Coat grows to a natural body length of 3-5 inches which requires combing and occasional grooming.  Many choose to have the fur cut back once every few months to keep the fur shorter and easier to maintain. Coats are usually wavy or curly, with a rare shorter hair coat.

Shedding: Mostly very light to non-shed

Allergy Friendliness: usually successful in families with mild allergies.  When a family has moderate to severe allergies, a backcross Dood is recommended

First Generation B

(F1B Goldendoodle)

As breeders are breeding towards non-shedding and allergy friendliness, a backcross Goldendoodle is generally the product of a Goldendoodle bred to a Poodle. The resulting dog is, on average, 1/4 Golden Retriever and 3/4 Poodle. Although there is less vigour in this crossing than in the original hybrid, the first generation backcross still is close enough in the breeding tree to benefit from hybrid vigour. With each successive generation vigour is lost.

Coat Maintenance: Moderate care

Coat Description: Coat continues to grow in length although similar in appearance to a first generation Goldendoodle. Coats are wavy or curly.

Shedding: Very light to non-shed

Allergy Friendliness:  recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies.

Second Generation

(F2B Goldendoodle)

A second generation backcross pup (F2B) is the result of a Goldendoodle (F1) bred to a Goldendoodle backcross (F1b). Although there is less vigour in this generation than in the first, the second generation backcross still is close enough in the breeding tree to the original hybrid to benefit from hybrid vigour. With each successive generation vigour is lost.

Coat Maintenance: Moderate to high care

Coat Description: Coat continues to grow in length although similar in appearance to a first generation Goldendoodle. Coats are wavy or curly.

Shedding: Mostly non-shed

Allergy Friendliness: recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies.

  Goldendoodle Coat Types

Flat Coat

Goldendoodles with a straight or flat coat tend to shed more than those with a wavy or curly coat. However the flat coat needs the least amount of up keep that the other two.

Wavy Coat

The wavy coat doodle brushed out every couple of days. It sheds less and causes less problems for those who have allergies than the flat coat doodle.

Curly Coat

Requires the most maintanence, needing to be brushed daily to avoid matting. Curly doodles should go to the groomer every 2-3 months. They do shed the least, if at all, out of the three and are best for those with allergies.

What to expect from a Goldendoodle?

Both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle are rate within the top 5 of all breeds for intelligence. While this means that your goldendoodle may learn fast, he or she must also be given activities to work their brains.  Doodles need interaction with their humans on a regular basis and do not do well left alone in a yard or house for long periods of time.

Please exercise your doodle’s mind with obedience training and play time. A bored doodle can lead to destructive behavior that can be very frustrating to their humans.

A basic obedience class with your puppy is very important. This will help to teach you how to stimulate the mind of your new family member, as well it is an excellent bonding experience.

Physical Exercise

Doodles are all retriever (most people don’t know that the poodle was breed for hunting and retrieving) and they require daily exercise. home.

While it is important for your adult goldendoodle to get regular exercise, it is equally important for your puppy to be allowed free play time outside but not be taken on long walks or other activities that can cause stress on their developing joints. During your first vet visit ask your doctor what activities are off limits for a large breed puppy. We do not take our dogs on long walks of a repetitive nature, allow them to climb stairs repetitively or jump excessively before the age of 1 year. We want our dogs to be a part of your family and day-to-day life.

Doodle Life Span

A Goldendoodle with proper care and reguale vet checks can live on average about 15 years. Buying a puppy is a big commitment so think long and hard about bringing a new member into your family.
